PREREQUISITE
60 credit hours.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will examine the changing role of special education in today's schools. Focus will be
on the classroom implications of current issues and developments with regard to inclusion,
service delivery, and instructional strategies. Major categories of exceptionality (communication
disorders, social/ emotional disorders, learning disabilities, auditory /visual, and gifted) will be
addressed to enable students to become acquainted with basic principles for meeting the unique
needs of exceptional students.
OBJECTIVES
• to become familiar with major categories of special need, with emphasis on the educational
implications for including children with special needs in regular classrooms.
• to develop teaching strategies for successful educational programs.
• to develop awareness of B.C. Ministry and school board policies and procedures with respect to
children with special needs.
• to deepen understanding of current issues and research in special education.
• to evaluate personal and societal beliefs about inclusion.
