COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is intended for senior students or practicing teachers who wish to explore the
contributions counselling concepts and skills will make in the classroom or similar settings. A
combination of lectures, narratives, discussions, practice exercises and seminars will be used to
explore such topics as: the role of the counsellor in the school, theories of counselling, effective
helping skills, and programs to promote affective development.
REQUIREMENTS
1.
Narrative project on children in schools and the school counselor. This project will include two
parts: (a) a retrospective narrative of your own experience as a child and adolescent in your
school years; (b) a narrative on the experience of a school counselor based on a personal
interview that you will conduct with a practicing school counselor. (30%)
2.
Resource Book Assignment: Your task is to develop a 'Resource Handbook' for use by classroom
teachers, dealing with an issue and challenge facing many teachers (e.g., Attention deficit
disorder, helping children cope with loss, aggressive behaviour). (30%)
3.
Class Group Presentation: Exploration of a specific theory or section from the text and
presentation in class of your findings. (30%)
4.
Class participation. (10%)
