COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is intended for senior students or practicing teachers who wish to explore the contributions counselling
concepts and skills will make in the classroom or similar settings. A combination of lectures, narrative, discussions,
practice exercises and seminars will be used to explore such topics as: the role of the counsellor in the school, theories
of counselling, effective helping skills, and programs to promote affective development.
REQUIREMENTS
1.
Communication Skills Tape and Transcript - (30%)
Each student will provide a tape and a transcript of a conversation in order to demonstrate effective
communication skills.
2.
Presentation - (30%) - (schedule to be determined in class)
Group Project and Presentation. Working with a small group, students will present a theory of counselling from
the textbook in a structured format. PART 1 (20 minutes maximum) An overview of the theory presented. This
will be accompanied by a summary handout to be duplicated and made available for all students. PART 2
(20 minutes maximum) An experiential learning activity, or role play related to one part of the content. PART 3
(20 minutes) A class discussion based on the strengths and limitations of the theory/ approach. Each group is
strongly encouraged to develop a system to insure that time limits are strictly observed. The time for PART 3 can
be extended beyond 20 minutes if the class becomes engaged in a discussion related to any component of the
presentation. PART 1 and PART 2 should not be extended.
3.
Exam - (40%)
Multiple choice exam based on readings, class presentation, and material presented by the instructor.

of
the exam will be discussed on the first day
of class.
