COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is intended for senior students or practicing teachers who wish to explore the
contributions counselling concepts and skills will make in the classroom or similar settings. A
combination of lectures, narrative, discussions, practice exercises and seminars will be used to
explore such topics as: the role of the counsellor in the school, theories of counselling, effective
helping skills, and programs to promote affective development.
REQUIREMENTS
1.
Change project: Identification of a desirable change in one's own life and a diary of application
of some counselling skills learned in class to this issue. An outline for the change project will be
developed throughout the term. (20%)
2.
Final Exam: A one-hour multiple choice exam based on material from the assigned chapters
of the Thompson and Rudolph textbook. (30%)
3.
Class Group Presentation: Exploration of a specific theory or section from the text and
presentation in class of your findings. (30%)
4.
