COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for senior students and practicing teachers who wish to acquire
psychological knowledge and counselling skills that can be applied in the classroom
setting. The focus of the class will be on an eclectic approach to how children's
problems develop and are maintained, and steps that can be taken to prevent and
resolve problems. Special topics will be considered, such as: classroom meetings,
parent-teacher relationships, discrimination, abuse, self-esteem. The emphasis
throughout will be on practical use of material covered in the course. Class activities
will be varied, (demonstrations, lectures, discussions, group work, library research,
skill practice), with a strong accent on student participation.
ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING PROCEDURES
1.
25 points. Written report on interventions for different problems.
2.
25 points. Self-change project: written report on the application of interventions to
a personal goal.
3.
25 points. Communication skills: Audiotape and transcript demonstrating use of
skills practiced in class.
4.
25 points. To be announced in class.
5.
10 points. Optional for extra credit: Library research on personally selected topic
(as approved by instructor).

I am enclosing information about registration for EDUC 425-4, E2:00, to be
taught by Frank Groenewald in the Fall Semester, 1990.
I understand that currently registered students will register for the course in the
normal manner, and that new or returning students (ie. S.F.U. students who have not
taken a course at Simon Fraser since the summer semester of 1989) will apply
through you.
Applications for admission (and readmission) forms are enclosed, as well as
blank course selection forms. New or returning students should complete both an
application for admission/readmission form and a course selection form on which they
have indicated that they wish to register for EDUC 425-4, E2:00.
Please send the completed forms, accompanied by cheques for $243, to me at
the address above. New students are required to submit official transcripts from all
post-secondary institutions at which they have studied before they will be admitted to
the university. If any of their studies took place at institutions outside British Columbia,
a $25 document evaluation fee is assessed. The cheque for this evaluation fee should
also be attached. Returning students who studied at another institution since they last
attended S.F.U. are also required to submit an official transcript from the institution at
which they studied. The transcripts should be sent to me.

NEW STUDENTS
Please complete an application for undergraduate admission and a course selection
form, on which you indicate that you wish to register for EDUC 425-4, E2:00.
Accompanying your application and course selection form, should be a cheque for
$243 for tuition fee and athletic fee. ($55 per credit hour x 4 credits, plus $23 off-
campus student activity fee.) In addition, official transcripts from all post-secondary
Institutions at which you have studied, are required to completeyour admission. If
documents originate outside the province of British Columbia, a $25 document fee is
assessed, and a document fee cheque should also be included. The completed
application and registration materials should be sent to:
