    COURSE DESCRIPTION
    This course is designed for senior students and practicing
    teachers who wish to acquire psychological knowledge and
    counselling skills that can be applied in the classroom setting.
    The focus of the class will be on an eclectic approach to how
    children's problems develop and are maintained, and steps that
    can be taken to prevent and resolve problems. Special topics will
    be considered, such as: classroom meetings, parent-teacher
    relationships, discrimination, abuse, self-esteem. The emphasis
    throughout will be on practical use of material covered in the
    course. Class activities will be varied, (demonstrations,
    lectures, discussions, group work, library research, skill
    practice)-, with a strong accent on student participation.
    ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING PROCEDURES
    1.
    25 points. Group project: written report on interventions for
    different problems.
    2.
    25 points. Self-change project: written report on the
    application of interventions to a personal goal.
    3.
    25 points. Communication skills: Audiotape and transcript
    demonstrating use of skills practiced in class.
    4.
    25 points. Change plan: written report on how you will use
    material covered in class in your classroom setting.
    5.
    10 points. Optional for extra credit: Library research on
    personally selected topic (as approved by instructor).
