    This course surveys a variety of theories of counselling and provides an opportunity
    for parti-cipants to develop some counselling skills that can be applied within any
    elementary or secondary school environment. A major focus will be upon basic
    attending skills and the counselling process. The course will therefore attempt
    to be relevant both to student teachers and to teachers currently working within
    the system.
    Through lectures, guest speakers, group discussions, films and supervised practice
    sessions, the following themes will be examined:
    (1)
    Roles and Responsibilities of School Counsellors.
    (2)
    Basic Attending Skills.
    (3)
    Approaches to Counselling.
    (Li)
    Affective Development.
    (5)
    Counselling Applications.
    (6) Use of Referral Services.
    (7)
    Administrative, Legal and Ethical Issues in School Counselling.
    (8)
    Counselling as a Way of Life.

    In addition to on-going self-evaluation, class members will be evaluated via two
    mini-papers and a final examination. Specific topics and criteria for the mini-
    papers will be discussed at the first class meeting on May 9th.
