Objectives:
Education 424 is a lab course that is complimentary to Education 422, the theoretically based course
on children with learning disabilities. In Education 424, students will have the opportunity to tutor children
with learning disabilities. In the Summer 2003 lab course, third grade children with attention, writing and
reading difficulties will attend a three week summer tutorial. One component of the intervention will be to
instruct children with writing disabilities using graphic-organizer software. SFU students will be assigned
two children to work with, and will be responsible for a.) conducting an informal assessment of each child's
learning difficulties and b) providing intervention for one hour/day during the tutorial sessions in the summer.
Some visits to the schools where the children attend may be required prior to the summer tutorial.
Time requirements:
Each SFU student will be required to attend the Thursday (8:30-12:20) lecture as well as commit to a one
hour daily tutorial session, beginning Wednesday, July 2 and continuing Monday to Friday until Wednesday,
July 23th. The times of these tutorials are: 9:30 - 10:30, 10:30 - 11:30, and 11:30 to 12:30. Each SFU
lent will sign up for one time slot at time of registration, on the first day of class.
PARTICIPATION IN
THE DAILY TUTORIAL IN JULY IS MANDATORY. For each day that an SFU student does not
attend (with or without a reasonable excuse) 10% of the total marks for the course will be deducted.
