PREREQUISITES

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to:
1.
Teach students to perform informal assessment of reading, writing and math problems.
2.
Teach students to understand how to set up an individual educational plan for a student
with learning disabilities.
3.
Teach students to teach a child or adolescent with learning disabilities.
4.
Teach students to monitor and evaluate progress of the students with learning disabilities.
STRUCTURE OF COURSE
The first two lecture sessions (July 3 and July 5) will prepare students for initial assessment and will
also deal with teaching strategies that may be utilized to teach tutees. During lab sessions (July 10
through July 27) each student will tutor a student with learning disabilities. Daily tutoring sessions will
be preceded by lectures designed to guide and support SFU students through their tutoring sessions
and will provide guidelines for assignments. The last sessions (July 31 to August 2) will be lecture
format. Final reports will be due on July 31.
REQUIREMENTS
Assignments will include reports on assessment and tutoring. There may be one or two mini tests
based on the required text, class notes and instructor placed readings in the library. Details will be
provided at the first class meeting.

Wong, Bernice Y.L. (1996)The ABC's of Learning Disabilities. San Diego: Academic Press.
Assessment Manuals: (available in Bookstore). Each SFU student will need to purchase one or two
manuals for use in the course. Instructions on which manual to purchase will be given in first class
meeting.
