PREREQUISITE
Corequisite: Educ 422
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide the student with theoretical knowledge, research based teaching
strategies and techniques, and a practical tutoring experience so that students learn to:
1.
Perform informal assessments in the areas of reading, writing, and in some cases math.
2.
Develop and implement an individualized educational plan for a student with learning
difficulties.
3.
Develop materials that respond to the assessment needs of their student.
4.
Teach, monitor and evaluate the learning progress of a student with learning difficulties and in
turn the SFU student will evaluate their own learning and teaching during this process.
STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE:
This course consists of lectures, lab activities, and a tutoring program.
Throughout May and June,
there will be lectures and lab activities.
Students will conduct informal assessments and develop an
individualized educational program in consultation with the instructor that is responsive to the
tutee's needs based on assessment and observations made in school settings.
* In July, for 3 weeks (July 4-20) each SFU student will tutor a youth with learning disabilities one
hour daily four mornings
a
week, Monday to Thursday. There will be shifts in tutoring: 10:00 am -
11:00 am;
11:15
am -
12:15
noon.
There will be no formal lecture the first week of tutoring, but time
will be provided to consult and confer with the instructor and teaching assistant. Lectures resume
for the second to fourth weeks in July.
REQUIREMENTS
Assignments will include reports on assessments, tutoring and learning logs. Details will be
provided at the first class.
REQUIRED READINGS
Wong, B.Y.L. (1996). The ABC's of Learning Disabilities San Diego: Academic Press.
ISBN 0-12-762545-3.
Assessment Manuals.
Students will be required to xerox materials while tutoring. Please be prepared to budget $20.00 for
xeroxing costs.
Note:
Students are encouraged to take both courses EDUC 422 & 424 concurrently. It is not manditory to take them together. The advantages of taking
both courses is that students can learn as theory is translated into practice. The disadvantage is that EDLJC 424 places heavy demands on students both
in terms of class and lab time and assignment completion that must be be done in schools outside of class time.
