COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to:
1.
Teach students to perform informal assessment of reading, writing and math problems.
2. Teach students to understand how to set up an individual educational plan for a student
with learning disabilities.
3.
Teach students to teach a child or adolescent with learning disabilities.
4.
Teach students to monitor and evaluate progress of the students with learning disabilities.
STRUCTURE OF COURSE
The first two lecture sessions (June 29 and July 2) will prepare students for initial assessment
and will also deal with teaching strategies that may be utilized to teach tutees. During sessions
July 6 through July 23 each SFU student will tutor a student with learning disabilities. Daily
tutoring sessions will be preceded by lectures designed to guide and support SFU students
through their tutoring sessions and will provide guidelines for assignments. The last sessions
(July 27 to July 30) will be lecture format. Final reports will be due during the first week of
August.
REQUIREMENTS
Assignments will include reports on assessment and tutoring. Details will be provided at the
first class meeting.

Assessment Manuals: Each SFU student will need to purchase one or two manuals for use
in the course (approx $15).
