COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to:
1. Teach students to perform informal assessments of reading and math problems.

Teach students to understand how to set up an individualized educational plan for a student with learning
disabilities.

Teach students to teach a child or adolescent with learning disabilities.
4.
Teach students to monitor and evaluate the learning progress of the students with learning disabilities.
STRUCTURE OF COURSE
During sessions July 10 through to July 31 each SFU student will tutor a student with learning disabilities. The first two
lecture sessions (July
3
and July 8) will prepare students for initial assessment of tutees and will also deal with teaching
strategies that may be utilized to teach tutees. Daily tutoring sessions will be preceded by lectures designed to guide and
support students through their tutoring sessions and will provide guidelines for assignments. The last sessions (August 5
to August 7) will be lecture format.
REQUIREMENTS
Assignments include actual reports on assessment and tutoring. Details will be provided at the first class meeting.

Wong, Bernice Y.L. The ABC's of Learning Disabilities. San Diego: Academic Press,
1996.
Assessment Manual: Each student will need to purchase one or two manuals for use in the course. Payment feeds back into
xeroxing costs for faculty.
Each student should expect to spend approximately $10.00 - $20.00 on making teaching prompts and games
(e.g., purchasing paper, laminating in Centre of Educational Technology).
