    COURSE OUTLINE:
    This course is the practical extension of EDUC 422: Theory of Learning Disabilities. As such it
    focuses on the assessment of academic problems and the provision of appropriate instructional
    programming with students at-risk for a learning disability.
    Topics to be covered include; educational difficulties of LD students, effective assessment
    procedures, the development of individual education plans, intervention strategies, monitoring and
    record-keeping procedures, working collaboratively with a school based team, and communicating
    with parents.
    A major course requirement is the tutoring of a student at-risk for a learning disability, at the
    elementary level. EDUC 424 students are responsible for contacting local schools, through the
    learning assistance teacher, in order to find an appropriate tutee for this course. During the course,
    EDUC 424 studentss should schedule
    4-5
    hours per week for tutoring the child selected. More
    information about the tutoring program will be provided at the first class.
    COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
    EDUC 424 students are required to assess the learning problems of a child and develop an
    appropriate educational plan. Assignments are to (1) provide an initial assessment of academic
    problems (20%), (2) design an individual education plan detailing intervention strategies (20%),
    (3) maintain and submit daily teaching records (20%), (4) evaluate the effectiveness of the
    individualized program for the learner and write a final report for parents and teachers (20%) and,
    (5)
    develop a resource portfolio of teaching strategies, journal articles, materials and ideas which
    will be useful for future teaching of students with learning difficulties (20%).

    Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from

    pm to 8pm, January 11th through April 5th
    inclusive, at the Northern Lights College campus.
