COURSE OUTLINE
This course is the practical extension of EDUC 422: Theory
of
Learning
Disabilities. As such, it focuses on the assessment of learning disabled (LD)
students' academic difficulties, the provision of appropriate instructional
programming/ strategies, and the evaluation of intervention strategies.
Topics covered include: educational difficulties of LD students;
assessment procedures/techniques and the development of individual
educational plans; strategy interventions; record keeping and reporting
assessment results to parents and teachers.
A major course requirement is the tutoring of an LD child or adolescent.
During July, EDUC 424 students are required to spend On campus, three
additional one and a half hour (11/2) sessions per week tutoring in
addition to attending scheduled lectures. The tentative tutoring times are
3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. More
information about the tutoring program will be provided at the first class.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students are required to assess the learning problems of a child or
adolescent and develop an appropriate educational plan. Assignments are
to (a) provide an initial assessment of academic difficulties (25%); (b)
design an individual education plan for the remediation of some specific
difficulties (25%); (c) keep a daily record of tutoring sessions evaluate the
effectiveness of the remediation/intervention for the learner, and write a
final report for parents and teachers (35%); and (d) develop a resource file
of teaching strategies, journal articles, materials and ideas which will be
useful for future remedial teaching (15%).
