Educ. 422.
COURSE OUTLINE:
This course is the practical extension of EDUC. 422: Theory of Learning Disabilities. As such, it focuses
on the assessment of learning disabled (LD) students' academic problems, the provision of appropriate
instructional programming, and the evaluation of remedial strategies.
Topics covered include: educational difficulties of LD students; effective assessment procedures; the
development of individual education plans; strategy interventions; record-keeping; and reporting
assessment results to parents and teachers.
A major course requirement is the tutoring of an LD child or adolescent. EDUC. 424 students are
responsible for contacting local schools, remedial centres, etc., in order to find an appropriate tutee for
this course. During February and March, EDUC. 424 students should schedule 4-6 hours per week for
tutoring the child or adolescent selected. This time is arranged outside of class time with the tutee and
his/her family. More information about the tutoring program will be provided at the first class.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to assess the learning problems of a child or adolescent and develop an
appropriate educational plan. Assignments are to (a) provide an initial assessment of academic
problems (20%); (b) design an individual education plan for the remediation of some specific
difficulties (30%); (c) evaluate the effectiveness of the remediation for the learner and write a final
report for parents and teachers (30%); and (d) develop a resource file of teaching strategies, journal
articles, materials, and ideas which will be useful for future remedial teaching (20%).
DATES OF CLASSES:
The instructor will, as far as possible, conduct classes once every two weeks in Fort St. John. Tentative
