Course Description:
Education 422 reviews the conceptual and research dimensions of learning disabilities from a North
American perspective. It forms a framework for the more practical dimensions of assessment and
remediation of learning disabilities presented in Education 424: Learning Disabilities Practicum.
Children and adults who struggle when presented with the academic and social demands of
school-based curriculums are the concern not solely of educators, but of parents, school district
administrators, policy makers, service providers and health professionals in the community. Several
issues dominate the field: What consensus is there in the field regarding the characteristics of children
with learning disabilities? What are the neurobiological, social and cultural origins of learning
disabilities? What can teachers and healthcare professionals do to better understand and assist children
with learning disabilities?
