    Course Description:
    This course introduces teachers and prospective teachers to the theory and practice of social studies
    education at the secondary school level. We will trace the historical premises of social education,
    examine the vision and philosophy, critically examine current practices, and explore ways of engaging
    students with social studies content, processes and attributes.
    Participants are expected to grapple with some of the current research in social education, to work
    collaboratively with colleagues, to think critically about issues, and to demonstrate that they can integrate
    the principles of social education into their lesson planning. Students are expected to produce curriculum
    that is thoughtful, justifiable, critical, controversial, inter-disciplinary and culturally relevant. A few select
    guests (social studies "experts") will be invited to class, and students will also participate in a mock trial.

    Social Studies and Current Events

    Each student will prepare a short critical analysis of a current event that connects
    with social education, and share this with classmates.
    Reflective Practitioner: Critical Analysis ?

    Students are expected to maintain a weekly response journal that critically examines
    the readings and class activities in relation to the "big ideas" of social education.
    Simulation: Mock Trial ?
    20%
    Students will participate in a mock trial that integrates curricular content, skills
    and citizenship attributes. Some class time will be allocated to prepare for the trial.
    Building Curriculum Resources

    Students will work in small groups to prepare a resource package of materials
    and ideas that enhances one theme or major topic in the Social Studies IRPs,
    grades 8 to 12.
    Unit Plan Development

    Each student will prepare a five-lesson unit that integrates the principles learned
    in the course.
    Attendance and Participation
    ?
    10%
    Students are expected to attend each class and come prepared to discuss the
    readings assigned for the day. For each day a student is absent (without a
    doctor's note or arrangements made ahead of time with the instructor), 3% will
    be subtracted from the total. If a student misses more than 3 classes he/she
    will be asked to withdraw from the course.
