This course is for middle and secondary school teachers. Its intent is to provide a thorough introduction
to Social Studies as a curricular area, within a professional, student-centered, and collaborative academic
setting.
OBJECTIVES:
'to familiarize students with the content, organization and problematic nature of the Social Studies
curriculum in British Columbia.
-to develop a critical appreciation of the place of Social Studies in the educational experience and lives
of children and young adults.
-to create and share, in a collaborative environment, engaging lessons and units including a variety of
student-centered activities, authentic assessment and literacy strategies, extension ideas, and resources.
-to examine the Social Studies curriculum through a variety of lenses and approaches such as: critical
thinking, cooperative learning, diversity, social justice, literacy, environment, citizenship and global
perspectives.
***Be prepared to engage in hands-on activities each day. Some activities will take place out of doors.
Dress appropriately.***

Studies teaching at this time. Be prepared to share this at our first session.

Lesson Studies (Gr. 8-11) ?

*individual lessons for 4 grade levels applying variety of strategies and themes.
Inquiry Project

*in depth exploration of a theme of choice related to SS curriculum
Final Project ?

*this may be a unit plan, or another assignment depending on students' prior
teaching experience and needs.
End of Course Conference ?

*30 minute scheduled instructor-student summative conference in last week of
semester.

* rubric will be used to evaluate quality, nature and consistency of
collaborative professional participation in coursework and discussion.
Exact format and due dates of assignments will be negotiated once 1) class size has been finalized 2)
individual needs of registrants has been determined. Assessment will be a combination of self and
instructor evaluation.
REQUIRED READINGS and FirstClass Access:
There is no required text for this course.
Please come equipped with a hardcopy of IRPs for both Social Studies 8-10, and Social Studies 11.
Bring to each seminar. These may be downloaded and printed from:
http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/irp_ss.htm (Office supply copy centres, including SFU campus print
shops, can usually print from zipdrives/memory sticks for less than the cost of printing: at home. Approx
$10-15,
including binding.)
Other articles and reading materials will be introduced by the instructor throughout the course in print
and on-line forms. A $10.00 copy charge will cover the cost of these additional resources. This will be
collected by the 2nd week of semester.
Students should ensure their FirstClass account is open and accessible, as this will be a primary means
of sharing course information, resources and curriculum ideas and materials created during the semester.
