This course is elementary and secondary school teachers. Its intent is to provide a thorough introduction
to Social Studies as a curricular area, within a professional, student-centred, and collaborative academic
setting.
OBJECTIVES:
-to familiarize students with the content, organization and problematic nature of the Social Studies
curriculum in British Columbia.
*to develop a critical appreciation of the place of Social Studies in the educational experience and lives
of children and young adults.
-to create, in a collaborative environment, engaging lessons and units including a variety of
student-centred activities, authentic assessment strategies, extension ideas, and resources.
-to examine the Social Studies curriculum through a variety of lenses and approaches such as: critical
thinking, cooperative learning, diversity, integrated study, social justice, environment, citizenship
and global perspectives.
***Be prepared to engage in hands-on activities each day. Some activities will take place out of doors.
Dress appropriately.***

session. Instructor will go first!

Exact format and due dates of assignments will be negotiated once 1) class size has been finalized 2)
individual needs of registrants has been determined. Assessment will be a combination of self and
instructor evaluation.
REQUIRED READINGS:
Social Studies K-7 Integrated Resource Package, 1998. BC Ministry of Education.
Social Studies 8-10 Integrated Resource Package.
Other articles and reading materials will be introduced by the instructor throughout the course. A $10.00
copy charge will cover the cost of these additional resources. Please bring a cash/cheque (made to SFU)
on the first day of class.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A K-12
Course. EDUC 414 and 474 will be taught concurrently in this
section, giving registrants an introduction to the entire Social Studies curriculum, while specializing in
their grade/age level of interest through assignments and in-class activities.
PLEASE NOTE:
This course will run concurrently with EDUC 474.
