COURSE DESCRIPTION
This methods course is for secondary social studies teachers. The intent of this course is to facilitate your integration of a conceptual and practical
understanding of social studies in order for you to develop engaging learning experiences for secondary students. Participants will participate
individually and collectively in a variety of experiential and reflective activities.
COURSE GOALS
1.
To examine the nature, rationales, organizational strands and goals of social studies
2. To create a meaningful unit based on cooperative learning, critical challenges and global education
3. To explore a variety of approaches to social studies such as concept learning, simulation and issues
approach so as to actively and meaningfully engage students
4.
To thoughtfully examine the B.C. social studies curriculum
5. To investigate a variety of meaningful and relevant resources
6. To work cooperatively to plan and to present a workshop on a strategy/approach appropriate to social studies
7.
To share ideas, approaches and resources
8. To examine assessment strategies that will enhance student learning
REQUIRED READINGS
Readings will be provided by the instructor at a cost of approximately
$25.00.
Please provide the $25.00 at the second class.

There will be a combination of self, peer and instructor evaluation.

In this course you are expected to complete reading assignments and course assignments. You will maximize your learning and that of your
classmates by actively participating in class activities. As this course requires active participation, 4% will be deducted for each missed class. All
assignments are to be submitted by the due date specified, unless arranged with the instructor at least one week in advance. Late submissions that
have not been approved in advance will be penalized by a loss of one letter grade (e.g. B to B-) for each day late. Work handed in must be
completed for this course only.
