PREREQUISITE:
Educ 401/402
This methods course is for secondary social studies teachers. The intent of this course is to facilitate your
integration of a conceptual and practical understanding of social studies in order for you to develop engaging
learning experiences for secondary students. Participants will participate individually and collectively in a variety
of experiential and reflective activities.
COURSE GOALS
1.
To examine the nature, rationales, organizational strands and goals of social studies
2.
To collaboratively plan and create a unit based on critical challenges
3.
To explore a variety of approaches to social studies to actively engage students
4.
To examine the B.C. social studies curriculum
5.
To explore a variety of teaching/learning strategies such as cooperative learning and simulation
6.
To investigate a variety of meaningful and relevant resources
7.
To plan and present a workshop on a strategy/approach appropriate to social studies
8.
To share ideas, approaches and resources
9.
To examine assessment strategies that will enhance student learning
PROPOSED ASSIGNMENTS AND EVALUATION:
There will be a combination of self, peer and instructor evaluation.

Because of the participatory and collaborative approach that will be used in this course, attendance at sessions is
critical. Marks will be deducted for missed classes.
