DESCRIPTION
This course examines the theory and practice of social studies education with a focus on
elementary and secondary school level. Students will explore historical and current concepts in
social studies education and critically examine instructional practices.

Reasons for social studies in the B. C. curriculum
3.
What should we teach in social studies?
4.
How should we teach it? approaches - critical thinking within the social studies
- integrating social studies with other courses
- disciplines within the social studies
5.
How should we teach it? linking methods to units
REQUIREMENTS
• Participation in a group project/ presentation
• Development of an instructional unit
• Participation in session activities including a simulation and a field study
• Self and peer assessment
• End of course conference
