COURSE DESCRIPTION
This methods course is for secondary social studies teachers. Prospective teachers can learn to teach
social studies best by grounding their teaching theory and methods in specific concepts, information
and ways of thinking --by understanding history and geography as a process of critical understanding
rather than a package of facts. The orientation of the course will therefore be towards a "workshop"
approach, where issues of evidence, interpretation and meaning (issues fundamental to the study of
history and geography) will be worked out through an examination of primary sources, particularly
historical documents. The tone of the classroom activities will be less a matter of "listen and learn" and
more a matter of "confer and produce." The overriding focus will be working with the instructor and
a small group of fellow students to develop a comprehensive unit package (a set of lesson plans and
supporting materials) for the teaching of social studies. Disk copies of all packages produced will be
shared with other members of the class.
OBJECTIVES
To enhance teachers' ability to plan and make use of a wide range of teaching strategies, learning
resources and assessment practices to deliver a social studies program at the secondary school level
that is engaging for students, effectively integrates other subject areas and infuses critical historical
thinking throughout.
