COURSE DESCRIPTION
This methods course is for secondary social studies teachers. The orientation of the course will be
what is sometimes referred to a "studio-conference" approach (this is the approach used in "writer's
workshop") where the tone of classroom activities will be less a matter of "listen and learn" and more
a matter of "confer and produce." The overriding focus will be working with the instructor and a small
group of fellow students to develop a comprehensive mini-unit (a sequence of lesson plans and
supporting materials) for the teaching of social studies at a chosen grade level. Disk copies of all
packages produced will be shared with other members of the class.
OBJECTIVES
To enhance teachers' ability to plan and make use of a wide range of teaching strategies, learning
resources and assessment practices to deliver a social studies program at the secondary school level
that is engaging for students, effectively integrates other subject areas and infuses critical thinking
throughout.
