COURSE DESCRIPTION
This methods course will explore topics such as the purpose of social studies, critical thinking, creative
controversies, nurturing empathy and social responsibility, teaching history and geography, and
integration with other subjects. Much of the course will be workshopping the course project, a unit
plan. As an individual you will produce 3 lesson plans that will be part of a comprehensive unit that
you will undertake as part of a small group. Disk copies of all units produced will be shared with other
members of the class.
OBJECTIVES
To enhance teachers' ability to plan and make use of a wide range of teaching strategies, learning
resources and assessment practises to deliver a social studies program at the secondary level that is
engaging for students, effectively integrates other subject areas and emphasizes collaboration and
critical thinking.
