Description
This course will begin with an examination of theoretical concepts drawn from reader-response
theories (textual, experiential, psychological, social, and cultural) and hermeneutics to provide a
theoretical framework for classroom practice. We will investigate the implications of these
theories for the development of writing and reading programs.
Goals
• The enrichment and discipline of the verbal imagination. The study of the literary arts and
their history.
• The imparting of a command of the intricate logics of discourse that language embodies and
grammar codifies.
• The overseeing and building on the process of reading, writing, speaking, viewing and
listening so that students learn to organize and reflect on their thinking.
• The initiating of students into possible worlds that may enlarge self-understanding in a
positive and ethical manner
Requirements
1.
Three brief (750-1000 words) commentaries on issues/ideas raised in the readings or in class
discussion (30%).
2.
Grouppresentation of a lesson incorporating selections from texts studied in class. (20%)
3.
The production of a thematic unit plan for Secondary Language Arts (40%)
4.
Attendance and participation at all classes and at a performance of BARD ON THE BEACH.
