PREREQUISITE:
EDUC 401/402
DESCRIPTION:
This course deals with the joys and challenges of teaching English
Language Arts in the public education system of British Columbia. Together, we shall
examine key aspects of the structure of today's English classrooms, taking into
consideration the needs and interests of our students, the learning objectives of the
English Language Arts curriculum, and the resources available to teachers of Secondary
Language Arts. Finally, we shall consider how successful English teachers create
cohesive classroom communities centered around the teaching of English Language Arts.
COURSE STRUCTURE AND ASSIGNMENTS:
Our course will alternate between
instruction and mini-workshops. The instructor shall introduce each of the topics/genres
in the first lesson of each mini-series. The next few classes will include a number of
student-led workshops (solo and groups of 2-4) on the topic presented in time slots of 20
- 30 minutes. Because Educ 412-4 is a designated "W" course, revision and re-drafting
of the lesson plans will be routine procedure. Considerable time will also be spent
examining the writing process and drafting personal narratives.
