COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on developing knowledge and understanding to create a rich and stimulating
language arts program in the secondary classroom. Issues in the teaching of the reading of literature,
writing, speaking, listening and viewing will be examined through current theory and teaching practice.
Objectives:
• To investigate the historical contexts of modernity and post-modernity and their cultural, social, and
individual ramifications in the teaching of English Language Arts
• To study key concepts such as literature, genre, semantics, discourse, writing process, reading
process, hermeneutics, media studies, assessment, and contemporary language theory
• To work collaboratively to develop curricula
• To develop the capacity to effectively critique oneself and others for the purpose of informing
instruction
Requirements:
1.
Three brief
(750-1000
words) pieces of work on ideas/issues raised by the readings or work in
class (30%).
2.
Group presentation of a didactic scheme incorporating selections from texts studied in class
(15%).
3.
Group performance incorporating selections from texts studied in class
(15%).
4.
The production of a thematic unit plan for Secondary Language Arts (40%).
