Description
This course will focus on developing knowledge, skills and strategies to create a rich
and stimulating language arts program in the secondary school classroom. Issues in the
teaching of the reading of literature, writing, speaking and listening will be examined
through current theory, teaching practice and conversation. There will be an emphasis
on teaching within the BC IRP.
Outline
• The study of the literary arts and their history
• The enrichment and discipline of imagination.
• The imparting of a command of the intricate logics of discourse that language
embodies
and grammar codifies.
• The overseeing and building on the process of reading, writing, speaking, viewing
and
listening so that students learn to organize and reflect on their thinking.
• The initiating of students into possible worlds that may enlarge self-understanding
in a
positive and ethical manner
• Preparation of a defensible theoretical and practical framework for the teaching of

language arts in BC

Requirements
1.
Three brief (750-1000 words) pieces of work /commentaries on issues/ideas raised
in the
readings or in class discussion
(15%).
2.
Two group presentations (didactic) incorporating selections from texts studied in
class. (20%)
3.
Reflective journal (20%)
4.
Development and defense of a theoretical and practical framework(s) for the
teaching of
language arts at the secondary school level
(15%)
5. The production of a thematic unit plan for Secondary Language Arts (20%)
6. Attendance and participation at all classes and at a performance of BARD ON
THE BEACH. (10%)
