DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to educate your imaginations in the area of secondary language arts. Using
theory, practice and experimentation you will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge base and
understanding of what it means to facilitate an enriched learning environment. The course was designed
with the belief that in order to teach language arts, you must spend time reading and writing and thinking
with reasoned passion. Designated as "W", or writing-intensive, you will enhance your learning by
engaging in the process of writing, revision and re-drafting of personal writings and lessons plans.
Course Structure
The course is broken into three sections: your words, classical words and everyman's words. 'Your
words" will focus on teacher as writer and teacher of writing. "Classical words" will focus on the study
of Shakespeare as a means of examining literature from a classical perspective. And "everyman's
words" will focus on the semiotics of teacher and student through the use of the short story and film.
A structured, interactive setting of professional collaboration, discussion and presentation will support
learning materials introduced by the instructor. Instructor and peer-feedback will allow students to revise
their work to meet course requirements. Together we can build a learning community based on
combined years of experience, knowledge and practice.
