Description
This course will focus on developing knowledge and understanding to create a rich and stimulating
language arts program in the secondary school classroom. Issues in the teaching of the reading of
literature, writing,speaking, listening and viewing will be examined through current theory and practice.
There will be some emphasis on teaching Canadian and BC authors.
Goals
• The enrichment and discipline of the verbal imagination. The study of the literary arts and their
history.
• The imparting of a command of the intricate logics of discourse that language embodies and grammar
codifies
• The overseeing and building on the process of reading, writing, speaking ,viewing and listening so
that students learn to organize and reflect on their thinking.
• The initiating of students into possible worlds that may enlarge self-understanding in a positive and
ethical manner

1. Three brief pieces of work /commentaries on issues/ideas raised in the readings and!
Or 2) a comparison of two videos of R & J as teaching tools. Or 3) using a BC
author in the ELA classroom. (20%)

Group presentation (didactic) incorporating selections from texts studied in class. (20%)
3. Group performance incorporating selections from texts studied in class. (20%)
4. The production of a thematic unit plan for Secondary Language Arts (40%)
