DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on developing knowledge and understanding to create a rich and dynamic language arts
program in the secondary school classroom. In developing worthwhile learning experiences for students, we
will consider the following: how one's own educational philosophy impacts curriculum design, theoretical
issues in literature and language education, and the importance of story in creating space for personal, societal,
and cultural meaning. A series of literary works from four genres will be studied in common, both for the
purpose of explication and creating teaching strategies. We will explore and develop pedagogical approaches
and assessment strategies to foster students' learning in writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. Familiarity
with the aims of secondary language arts programs, including provincial curriculum guides, will be addressed.
There will be some emphasis on teaching Canadian authors. One key focal point will be on imaginative
education, and another key focal point will be on how to create curriculum that encourages authenticity in an
ethic of caring. Participants are expected to contribute to dialogue and activities arising from the readings.
REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Four shorter pieces of work, using a variety of media where appropriate, on teaching ideas and/or issues
raised by the readings or work in class. (20%)
2.
Group presentation on teaching a lesson. (20%)
3.
Group drama performance incorporating and transforming selections from the common literary works.
(20%)
4.
Creation of a curriculum design, with reference to research, in the secondary language arts. (40%)
