This is an instructional course organized for self-study through distance education. It is designed for
secondary teachers of English who teach language arts. The job of this course is to improve your
chances for having an educated imagination and passing this gift onto your students. To help you in
that process, you are asked to do a lot of reading, writing and thinking in a very structured and
interactive setting using electronic conferencing.
Three basic components include:
(1)
YOUR WORDS which focuses on the teacher as writer and teacher of writing. In this section, you
will develop your imagination using the writing skills, attitudes and processes of professional writers.
(2)
CLASSICAL WORDS, which focuses on the study of Shakespeare. You will learn ways to bring
Shakespeare to the classroom in ways that are inventive and student-centered.
(3)
EVERY MAN'S WORDS which focuses on the study of the short story. In this section, you will
educate your imagination by examining short stories which are of particular appeal to secondary
