    In-Service: Theory and Practice of Implementation
    Calendar description: (EDUC 407-5) ...... "for practising teachers to
    implement new curriculum or instructional techniques in their classroom".
    CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
    What is children's literature, in the first place? And why bring children and literature
    together, anyway? And what books to whom? And when? And how?
    These and related questions are surely at the very centre of the educational enterprise, both
    at home and at school, from early infancy to late adolescence. The answers to these questions speak to
    our most basic notions of what it is to be human, what it is to be educated.
    The process of bringing children and books together does not, of course, occur by itself - by
    and large, whether the child is a toddler or a teenager, it requires the involvement, help, and
    mediation of an interested and skilled adult.
    This course will:
    • examine the process of bringing children and books together, and
    • explore the role of the children, parents, and teachers in this process.
    The course will focus on:
    • presenting literature - e.g. through reading aloud; storytelling; booktalking, etc.
    • exploring literature -- e.g. through role-play and story drama; etc.
    • responding to literature - e.g. through individual conferencing; group discussion;
    reader-response journals, etc.
    • creating a context for learning -- e.g. through learning centres; literature-based
    language arts curricula; individualized reading programs, etc.
    The course has as its overall purpose to provide practising teachers with experiences which
    will enable them to develop into more informed, thoughtful, and effective practicioners.
    The course will comprise a range and variety of learning experiences, including:
    • lectures, workshops, and seminars;
    • classroom visits, presentations and demonstrations;
    • field-work with children, encompassing focused practice of instructional procedures,
    techniques and strategies, with peer review and feedback
    • individual study and research.
