In this course students will design a small group cooperative learning
curriculum project which they will then implement in their classrooms. One of
the objectives of the course will be to assess the effects of the implementations
on childrens' attitudes to diversity.
OUTLINE OF ACTIVITIES
Review of principles of small group cooperative learning.
• Review of sample curriculum units and activities which use a small
group cooperative approach.
Review of research on effective implementation of small group
cooperative learning.
Review of research on childrens' attitudes to diversity.
Development of 8 week long curriculum units. The curriculum content
will be determined by individual participants but should have some
cultural content. (Students will work co-operatively with others teaching
at the same grade levels.)
II. WEEKS 5- 12: IMPLEMENTATION
• Students will implement units in their classrooms in consultation with
the instructor who will be available for on-site (classroom) visits.

Weekly seminars on campus will focus on refinement of materials and
classroom implementation process.
Ill. WEEK 13: ASSESSMENT
• Students will identify strengths and weaknesses of the implementation
process and its impact on childrens' attitudes to diversity.
PREREQUISITES: all of the below
Enrollment in Educ. 441 (on campus offering).
• Familiarity with principles of Small Group Cooperative Learning (either
through Educ. 441 or the workshop being offered on November

• Teaching in a classroom where it will be possible to implement
curriculum units.
• Willingness to administer pre and post questionnaires to students in
your classroom to ascertain attitudes to diversity.
