EDUCATION 406-5: PROFESSIONAL IN-SERVICE PRACTICUM
- SUBJECT AREA: ELEM. PHYSICAL EDUCATION
- COORDINATOR OF COURSE: DR GLENN KIRCHNER
During Spring semester 1986, Education 406 will be
offered to practising teachers in School District #43 who
will also be registered in Education 479: (Designs for
Learing - Elementary Physical Education. Teachers who have
previously taken Education 479 may register for Education
406 with permission of instructor. Teachers who elect to
take Education 406 will select one or more topics from
Educatioin 479. (see enclosed course outlines) for
implementation in their own physical education program.
Education 406 will include the following components:
1. Plan e
and Implementation
Each teacher will select an appropriate number of
topics to be implemented. A tentative schedule of
implementation will be planned for each selected topic and
discussed with Dr. Kirchner.
2.
On-Site Supervision
During the Spring Semester, Dr.Kirchner or other
physical education specialists, will make periodic visits to
each teacher to provide assistance in the form of materials,
feedback, and demonstration lessons.
3. -Seminars
A two hour seminar will be scheduled each week to
provide a forum for teachers to share ideas, discuss common
concerns, and to solve problems. (schedule TBA)
4. Enrichment
Several related activities will be scheduled after
school to provide additional ideas and practical examples of
school-based models of implementation. These activities
will include quest speakers, demonstration lessons, and
workshops.

Requirements for Credit
Participants are required to:
- Gain a working understanding of the theory of Teaching For Thinking.
- Implement-teaching For Thinking strategies in their classrooms.
- Monitor their skill development using self-evaluation procedures.
The following activities are to be completed in meeting these requirements:
I Understanding the Theory.
Read Put Some Thinking In Your Classroom and/or selected mimeos.
Complete pre- and post- identification of students exhibiting ''thinking
related'' behaviours.
Write a short paper outlining the theory of Teaching for Thinking and
relate it to classroom practice.
H Implementation of Strategies.
Introduce a selection of thinking operations to the students.
Have students engage in thinking activities several times a week.
Interact in ways that promote thinking.
Participate in after school group sessions.

I I Monitor Development.
Keep a personal record (journal) of your reactions to training.
Record and analyze your functioning on a regular basis (at least eight
audio and two video recordings over the semester).
Prepare an annotated transcript
(4
to 6 minutes) of a continuous segment
of-video showing your "best" functioning.
Complete a self-evaluation regarding your completion of course requirements
and skill development.

Education 406 (Abbotsford): Advancing and Improving
Educational Practice
This course is offered for practising teachers who wish
to further their teaching skills in the development and
implementation of teaching for thinking in the classroom.
In this practicum, the teachers own classroom serves as the
laboratory in which teaching is studied and in which
individual professional development is carried out.
Education 406 includes classroom practice (practicum)
and analysis of classroom practice (seminars/conferences).
Conferencing and seminars will be a regular part of the
practicum program and will emphasize the examination of
teaching practices as they relate to teaching for the
objectives.
