PREREQUISITE
60 hours of credit (or permission of the instructor)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will address issues in First Nations Education in British Columbia within the context of its historical
development, on going tradition, and current practices.
OBJECTIVES
1. To introduce an historical perspective of First Nations Education.
2.
To examine points of view, perspectives and frames of reference.
3.
To develop an awareness of issues regarding the shifting of the locus of control for First Nations Education
away from mainstream communities of dominance to First Nations communities.
4. To introduce models of education developed for First Nations
5.
To examine emerging pedagogical, curricular and language issues in First Nations Education.
6. To critically examine resources for First Nation

REQUIREMENTS
• Three one page paper, word-processed, on an article or chapter of required reading - 30%
• Book review - 10%
• Interview with First Nations Educator (Cultural, Contemporary) - 10%
• Evaluation of curriculum materials - 25%
• Project and Presentation - 25%
