DESCRIPTION:
This is a basic course in adult education for students from all disciplines, with a focus on
community programs for seniors. The course will be of particular interest to those
working, or preparing to work, with older adults. The goal is to assist students, who may
range in age from 18 to 80, to develop more effective strategies for meeting the needs of an
expanding population of older adults through education.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To better understand the learning lives of older adults and the variety of contexts and
methods of learning/teaching as a basis for program development. Participants of this
course will:
1.
Identify and discuss current issues in policy and practice in older adult education.
2.
Compare and contrast concepts of pedagogy, andragogy, and gerogogy.
3.
Suggest the implications of a commitment to lifelong learning for education in the four
ages or lifestages.
4.
Understand central concepts (e.g., empowerment, learner-focused, perspective
transformation, worldview, lifelong learning, active learning, self-directed learning,
facilitation)
5.
Understand what is distinctive about older adult learners.
