Course Description:
This program is designed for teachers of Japanese and Mandarin Chinese languages
who have a desire to develop new teaching skills and strategies The course will
focus on the theory and practice of teaching communicative competency in a second
language class. Special emphasis will be given to the study of the most current
research in first and second language acquisition and learning, the implementation of
the provincial syllabus for the teaching of Japanese and Chinese in B.C., and the
designing, of some effective classroom activities and materials to enhance student
communicative proficiency.
English is the language of instruction. However, students will be split into language
groups in the sessions whereby specific issues and needs in the teaching of Japanese
and Mandarin Chinese will be discussed and examined. Therefore, a number of
experienced Japanese and Mandarin Chinese educators/teachers will assist the
course instructor as resource people in these practical sessions.

Course Requirements:
Instruction will cover a 10-day period so students will be required to complete some
pre-course readings and assignments from the required textbooks. These readings
will be offered mainly in English. A list of required readings will be forwarded to the
students by June 30,
1989.
