This program is primarily designed for heritage language teachers who want to develop new
teaching skills, It will be of particular persons to persons teaching Asian languages as a
second/modern language in the regular school system or in the heritage language program
taught after school hours. Special emphasis will be given to the study of some current research in
second and heritage language teaching in Canada, and particularly in B.C.
The course is divided into three parts:
Part I - Developing curricula for Asian language programs
1.
Japanese and Mandarin Chinese Curriculum Guides for Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 in B. C.
2.
Generic Curriculum Model
3.
Model used by other provinces or countries
Part II - Using effective classroom activities to improve student's competency in communication
skills
1. Cooperative learning
2.
Cultural studies - history, festivals, customs and literature
3.
Field trips and community resources
4. Audio-video resources
5.
Student projects
6.
Drama, Music and Games
7.
Exchange programs
Part Ill - Lesson plans and classroom management
1.
The use of textbook as a supplementary teaching tool
2.
Adapting and making teaching materials and aids

Multi-level, multi-age class
English is the language of instruction. However, some practical workshops or extra-curricular
activities maybe conducted in Chinese and/or Japanese. Instruction will cover a 10-day period so
students will have to complete some pre-course reading which will be mostly in English.
