COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Painting and drawing in the classroom is designed as an in-depth extension to Designs for Learning: Art
(477-4). The course will offer students a solid foundation of methods and concepts in painting and
drawing that are applicable to Elementary and Secondary levels. Course activities will Consist of lectures,
demonstrations, readings and laboratory assignments. Student demonstrations will be part of the course.
Objectives:
1.
Practical methods of creating Art through explorations of a variety of painting and drawing media
appropriate for student levels (K-12);
2.
T
he stages of creative development through visual analysis of children's art and an examination of both
historical and contemporary research in this area;
3.
Current philosophies and practices of assessing student artwork;
4.
A variety of short and long-term planning systems, with the outcomes of curriculum development;
5.
The process of critical analysis when viewing original works of art;
6.
Classroom management and storage of art supplies pertaining to painting and drawing.

• non-representational, representational and abstracted approaches to art-making
• DBAC (Discipline-Based Art Curriculum)
• critical analysis; historical and contemporary theory
• stages of creative development in children
• classroom management of space and supplies used in painting/drawing

• displaying children's work
• materials, media and processes in painting and drawing for elementary and secondary levels.

Criteria used for assessing and evaluating student progress and successful completion of course
requirements will comprise the following:
• demonstrated evidence of project objectives fulfilled as outlined in project hand-outs;
• basic levels of technical competency in processes demonstrated in class;
• demonstration of terms and concepts discussed in class that are used in written projects'
• a marked increase in levels of creative involvement throughout duration of course (problem-solving
through creative skill-building and individual expression);
• written student evaluation of student progress.
Student assessment will take place in verbal consultations with instructor and bi-weekly written self-
evaluations. Each of four projects will be weighted evenly.
