PREREQUISITE:
Education 401/402 or the equivalent of first year practicum.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to Canadian law and the
legal process. The course is designed to introduce teachers and administrative
officers to a broad range of legal topics and concepts, particularly as they relate
to the B.C. education setting. No prior legal knowledge or experience is
required. The different areas of the law that will be discussed include:
* tort law and negligence
* contract law
* family law (divorce, custody, maintenance)
* labour law and collective bargaining
* criminal law and the Young Offender's Act
* administrative law (due process and natural justice)
* constitutional law and the Charter of Rights
REQUIRED TEXTS:
G. Gall, The Canadian Legal System (2nd Edition). (Toronto: Carswell, 1983).
S. M. Waddams, Introduction to the Study of Law (3rd Edition). (Toronto,
Carswell, 1987).
A legal workbook will be distributed in class.

the Charter of Rights (Calgary: Detselig Press, 1986).
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students will be evaluated on the basis of class participation (20%), an in-class
presentation (20%), a research paper (30%), and a final exam (30%).
