COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will provide practical instruction in literacy of a Salish Language, namely
St'at'imcets (Upper Lillooet). It is intended for speakers of this native language who are
currently teaching it in primary or secondary schools. First, the relevance and history of
orthographies and of literacy for native language teaching will be discussed. Next,
students will be familiarized with the basic elements of phonetics and phonemics and the
practical alphabet already developed for their language by linguists (i.e. the alphabet
devised by J. Van Eijk). For the remainder of the course, students will explore the uses of
literacy in aboriginal language teaching through a hands-on approach. This will involve
the research, compilation and production of materials, i.e. myths/stories, songs or other
native language materials for the classroom.
