ENABLING LEARNERS FOR THE YEAR 2000
?
(E6.00)
Fall Semester, 1991
?
Instructor: R. Fogarty
(September 3— November 29)
Location: Richmond
PREREQUISITE (or special instructions)
Participants may have taken no more than one previous COMET course.
DESCRIPTION
The summer institute will focus on current theory, research and practices in the areas of
teaching for transfer, developing thinking through cooperative learning, and teaching for
multiple intelligences. Topics to be addressed include: the theory of human intelligences
as a pluralistic phenomenon; strategies for teaching to awaken and engage the full
intelligence potential of all students; techniques for introducing cooperative learning and
building students' social skills; and strategies for identifying elements of curriculum
which facilitate transfer of learning and applying these to the design of instruction.
Participants will investigate one of the three themes (teaching for transfer, cooperative
learning, or teaching for multiple intelligences) in depth in order to design an
implementation project which puts the theory and research into practice in the fall
semester. Throughout the fall they will monitor the implementation process to assess
students' growth in the focus area and to improve their own teaching practices in relation to
the theoretical framework provided by the summer institute.
OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
a.
Gain a working understanding of the theory and research in one of the three theme
areas;
b.
Learn approaches for teaching intelligence, transfer, and cooperative skills in the
classroom;
c.
Gain skill in using a wide variety of strategies which facilitate student
development in the theme areas.
