COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is intended to help students explore approaches, methods and techniques for
teaching Asian or heritage languages in a Canadian context. Classes will be
comprised of teachers of Japanese, Mandarin and heritage languages. Participants
will gather for the first half of each class for theoretical discussion of issues and will be
split into 3 groups (Japanese, Mandarin and heritage language) for more practical
considerations for the second half of each evening. The Asian language groups will be
taught in their respective languages for the second half while the heritage language
group will be instructed in English.
Participants will consider the motivations and attitudes of students, teachers and the
community and will discuss the appropriateness of particular aims for particular
communities. Provincial and national curricula for these languages will be
examined and evaluated. Participants will learn techniques for planning lessons, for
evaluating, selecting and creating teaching materials and for presenting lessons to
groups of students. Techniques for evaluating proficiency and learning will be
discussed. Classroom management techniques available to teachers will also be
presented. Finally, participants will consider how cultural considerations form part
of an Asian or heritage language curriculum.
