Overview
Reviews the participation of Indian students in special programs for the
handicapped and gifted and talented. Examines promising practices and policy
with respect to prereferral strategies, instruction, assessment, parental roles,
and school-community relations with emphasis on cultural and Indian
involvement considerations. Advocacy for improved educational opportunities
will also be discussed.
Goals
Demonstrate knowledge of problems related to identifying and serving
Indian handicapped and gifted and talented students.

Understand the influence of culture, language, and Indian self-
determination on the education of Indian children with special needs.
3.
Assess the relationship between schools and Indian communities in terms
of improved educational opportunities for Indian children with special
needs.
4.
Demonstrate the ability to identify and apply promising practices and
policies with respect to improved prereferral strategies, instruction,
assessment, parental involvement, and school-community relations.
5.
Demonstrate an understanding of how advocacy can contribute to
improved educational opportunities for Indian exceptional children.
Evaluation
1.
Participation - 25 percent.
2.
Project or Midterm - 25 percent.
3.
Final (during class time) - 50 percent
