Course description
Education, broadly defined, is imbedded within wider social and cultural relations rather than separated
from them. Education 382 is a survey course that aims to provide students with theoretical and
conceptual background and language from which to understand diversity in education.
The objectives of this course are to:
• situate issues of diversity in Canadian schools within theory on social justice, power, and politics of
education;
• provide an overview of "differences that matter" as they relate to diversity in education; and
• equip students with concepts around diversity issues by which to better "see" and make sense of
social injustice in education.
Successful completion of this course means that students will have:
• become knowledgeable about issues of diversity in BC educational policy and practice;
• demonstrated an increase in critical self-awareness of their assumptions, beliefs, and behaviours with
regard to various "differences that matter";
• become conversant about how the concept "diversity" overlaps with and contrasts the concept
"difference";
• enhanced their skills in identifying and dialoguing about dynamics of power and privilege;
• examined implications for social justice in education; and
• explored ways that educators can increase appropriate responses to diversity in schools and to
address difference.
