TUESDAY 4:30-8:20 pm

PREREQUISITE:
This course is available to students who have completed a minimum of 6 semester
credits taken from Education, the Social Sciences and/or the Humanities, or upon approval of the
instructor.
Course Description:
Education 382 is designed to address both practical and theoretical orientations to diversity in Canadian
education. Organized around the central theme, "the politics of diversity and its impact on schooling,"
we will: 1) survey historical responses to social diversity in Canada, and 2) examine educational
principles, practices, and perspectives as they relate diversity. The primary impetus that drives our
inquiry in this course relate to questions about how cultural, ethnic, racial, linguistic and religious
diversity, as well as socio-economic, gender, and ability differences impact Canadian schooling.
Objectives: Learning outcomes for students:
The course offers a range of learning experiences that include: 1) individual study and fieldwork
assignments, 2) small-group and whole-class discussions and seminars, 3) problem-solving activities,
and 4) written and oral presentations, lectures and workshops.
Students will examine and explore:
• The history of how diversity has been regarded by education in Canada and
BC;
• The major issues affecting linguistic, ethnic and cultural diversity, and
gender differences in schools;
• What culture, gender, linguistic and economic difference mean to individuals
and groups;
• The underlying educational mandates that influence diversity education in
BC;
• The differing ways diversity is addressed in classrooms and schools;
• How school curriculum and classroom learning materials reflect stereotyping
and bias;
• How teachers and schools inadvertently further social injustices;
• The ways that classrooms, schools, and teachers can increase appropriate
responses to diversity in schools.
