60 credit hours. Students who have received credit for EDUC 441, EDUC 382-4

Special Topcs from Fall 2003-3 on, cannot take EDUC 382 for further credit.

Description of Course:

The purpose of this course is to:

situate issues of diversity in Canadian schools within theory on social justice, power, and politics of

education;

provide an overview of various "isms," such as (but not limited to) racism, sexism, heterosexism, and

classism, as they relate to diversity in schools; and

equip pre-service teachers with concepts around diversity issues by which to better "see," make sense

of, and respond to social injustice in schools.

Learning outcomes for students:

Through a range of learning experiences including individual study and relevant readings; small-group

and whole-class discussions; problem-solving activities; and written and oral presentations, students in

EDUC 382 will:

• become knowledgeable about issues of diversity in BC educational policy and practice;

• become conversant about how the concept "diversity" overlaps with and contrasts the

concept "difference";

• ?

examine implications for social justice in education;

• ?

explore ways that educators can increase appropriate responses to diversity in schools

and to address difference.
