PREREQUISITE: French 12; French 202 is recommended but not required.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is for students who may be contemplating becoming teachers of Core French, French Immersion
or for intermediate and middle school generalists who want the necessary preparation to teach Core French in
their school setting. The general objective of the course is to help prospective French teachers to better
understand Canadian bilingualism, its historical, socio-political and cultural context, to acquire knowledge
about principles of second language pedagogy as well as to gain basic understanding of French programs'
objectives and contents.
The language of instruction will be French, but the class will be "English-friendly".
Subjects will include:

Understanding of the socio-political background of bilingualism in Canada.
- Understanding of the different educational settings for bilingual education in Canada: Core French,
Immersion and Francophone programs.
- Introduction to modern principles of language teaching and learning through an overview of current research
findings.
- Introduction to the French curriculum through a survey of the aims, objectives and contents of Core French/
French Immersion programs in elementary and secondary schools.
- Basic knowledge of some teaching principles of French as a second language, such as the communicative
approach and the use of authentic materials in classroom setting
- Elaboration of a personalized language portfolio.
